A thoughtful professional reflecting on self-doubt and hidden beliefs that influence success and confidence.

Self-Doubt Has a Hidden Agenda

"After we terrorize ourselves with self-doubt, our only relief is to get moving again."
Twyla Tharp

I have always loved these words from Twyla Tharp because they remind us that self-doubt does not disappear just because we become successful. Even someone who is known around the world can still question themselves.

That is important to remember because so many people believe confidence comes first. They think they need to feel ready before they can move forward.

The truth is often the opposite.

Many of us wait for fear to disappear before taking the next step. While we wait, life keeps moving, and the opportunities we long for pass us by.

I once worked with a lawyer. Let's call him David.

David was hardworking and deeply cared about every client who came through his door. He gave people his best, worked long hours, and built a strong reputation for doing excellent work.

Even with all that effort, he struggled financially. He always seemed to be working harder than everyone else, yet he was only getting by.

He could not understand why other lawyers were building successful practices while he stayed in the same place. He wondered what they knew that he did not.

As we talked, something important began to appear.

David discovered he had been living by an Invisible Rule that had shaped his decisions for many years. Until that moment, he had never questioned it because it felt normal.

David was the first person in his family to become a lawyer. His family often teased him by calling him a "big shot," and they would make comments about wealthy people acting like they were better than everyone else.

Those words stayed with him.

David loved his family and wanted to feel accepted by them. Without realizing it, he began to believe that earning a lot of money meant he would become someone they would no longer recognize or respect.

That belief settled deep inside him.

It influenced the choices he made every day. He charged less than his work was worth, avoided raising his fees, and hesitated whenever an opportunity could bring him greater success.

From the outside, it looked like a business problem. Underneath, it was an Invisible Rule that told him success could cost him the love and acceptance of the people who mattered most.

Self-doubt was not the real problem.

Self-doubt had become a messenger carrying an old belief that no longer served him. Every time he thought about growing his business, that hidden belief reminded him to stay small because staying small felt safer.

Once David recognized that Invisible Rule, everything began to change.

He no longer believed that financial success would separate him from his family or change the kind of person he was. He could finally see that earning more money did not mean becoming selfish or forgetting where he came from.

With that new understanding, his choices became different.

He raised his fees to reflect the value he provided. He stopped apologizing for his expertise and started believing that helping more people and earning more money could exist together.

His confidence grew because his actions changed first.

That is exactly what Twyla Tharp teaches us. Action helps us move beyond self-doubt because every step forward weakens the old story that has been holding us back.

The Invisible Rule shows us something even deeper.

Many times, self-doubt is not about our abilities at all. It comes from beliefs we created years ago because we wanted to belong, feel safe, or protect the relationships we cared about.

Those beliefs may have helped us once.

Today, they may be standing between us and the life we have been working so hard to create.

I want to leave you with one question.

Is there an old belief that makes success feel dangerous because you fear it could change how you see yourself or how others see you? If that belief is there, give yourself permission to notice it with honesty.

You are not leaving your values behind when you grow.

You are becoming the person you were always capable of being. When you release the Invisible Rule that has been guiding your life, you create space for confidence, freedom, and the success you deserve.

If you are ready to uncover the Invisible Rules shaping your life and holding you back, I would be honored to help you.
