I Never Noticed I Had Set a Deadline for My Dream

September 07, 20268 min read

No one ever told me, “Pamela, your dreams have an expiration date.” No one told me that I had to achieve my biggest dreams in my thirties or forties, or that after seventy, I should stop dreaming and spend my time looking back on my life.

And yet, somewhere along the way, I started to believe that was true.

I continued coaching, speaking, and helping other people create better lives. From the outside, it may have looked like I was still moving forward, but inside, something had changed.

I had stopped believing that the best part of my life could still be ahead of me. Without realizing it, I had allowed my age to become a rule that shaped what I believed was possible for my future.

I now call that belief an Invisible Rule.

An Invisible Rule is a belief that influences our choices, even though no one ever clearly told us we had to live by it. We pick up these rules from the people around us, from our culture, from what we see online, and from the stories we hear throughout our lives.

We see young people praised for becoming successful early in life. We hear stories about people who retire young, achieve their dreams quickly, or accomplish something extraordinary before a certain age.

Over time, we begin measuring our own lives against those timelines. Before we even realize it, we start believing that success, happiness, love, or our biggest dreams must happen by a certain age.

That belief can become a deadline we never chose.

For years, I never noticed that I had created one of those deadlines for myself. No one had told me that I was too old to dream, but somewhere along the way, I began acting as if my biggest opportunities had already passed.

I was still living my life, but I was no longer expecting something new and exciting to begin. I had accepted the idea that the best years were behind me instead of believing they could still be waiting ahead.

Then something happened that changed the way I saw my life.

I attended an AI class led by Lanny Morton. At first, I almost did not go because I could not see how artificial intelligence had anything to do with my life or the dream I had once carried inside me.

I wondered what I could possibly learn from it. I thought it might simply be something new that younger people understood better than I did.

But before the class was over, something inside me began to wake up.

I remember feeling goosebumps as I realized that my dream had never actually disappeared. It was still there, waiting for me to notice that I had been the one telling myself it was too late.

That realization touched something deep inside me.

My dream had not expired because I reached a certain age. I had simply believed an Invisible Rule that made me think there was a deadline for what I wanted to create.

The Invisible Rule had convinced me that my time had passed.

At 77 years old, I see my life differently now. I do not wake up thinking only about the years behind me because I have finally remembered how exciting it feels to look ahead.

I wake up thinking about what is still possible. I think about the people I can help, the ideas I can create, and the dreams that may still have a place in my future.

That understanding changed everything for me.

I realized that my age was never the real obstacle standing in my way. The real obstacle was the belief I had accepted about what someone my age was supposed to do.

I had allowed an Invisible Rule to tell me what chapter of life I was in. I had accepted the idea that dreaming big belonged to a younger version of me.

But who made that rule?

Who decided that our biggest dreams must happen when we are young? Who decided that there is an age when we should stop creating, stop learning, stop growing, or stop believing that something beautiful could still be ahead?

No one ever gave me a clear answer.

That is when I began to understand something important about Invisible Rules. Many of the beliefs that control our lives were never consciously chosen by us in the first place.

We simply absorb them.

We hear them so often that they begin to sound like facts. Then one day, we realize we have been making important decisions based on rules we never stopped to question.

That is why Invisible Rules can be so powerful.

They can shape the jobs we choose and the dreams we give up on. They can influence the relationships we stay in, the opportunities we avoid, and the parts of ourselves we believe we have outgrown.

Sometimes, they even convince us that we are too late.

Too late to start a business. Too late to change careers. Too late to fall in love, learn something new, travel somewhere new, write a book, or begin again.

But what if being too late is simply another Invisible Rule?

What if your dream has been waiting for you this entire time?

I never wanted to build an app just because I wanted to create technology. My real dream has always been much deeper than that.

I want to help people stop losing years of their lives to beliefs they never consciously chose. I want people to see the Invisible Rules that may be shaping their decisions before those rules steal more time from the life they truly want.

If I can help even one person recognize a belief that has been holding them back, then this new chapter of my life will mean something important. Every year I spent believing it was too late will have helped lead me to the work I am doing now.

That is why I am so excited about what comes next.

I do not believe dreams belong only to young people. I believe dreams belong to anyone who is still willing to ask what might be possible.

Your life does not have to follow the timeline you imagined years ago. You are allowed to change your mind, begin again, discover something new, and want something different from what you wanted before.

You are allowed to have a dream that takes longer than you expected.

Maybe you thought you would have achieved it by now. Maybe you imagined that by a certain age, you would already have the career, relationship, business, financial freedom, confidence, or life you dreamed about.

But life does not always follow the schedule we create in our minds.

Sometimes we need more time to become the person who is ready for the dream. Sometimes we take a different road before finding the one that truly belongs to us.

And sometimes, the dream itself changes as we grow.

That does not mean you have failed.

It may simply mean that your life is still unfolding.

Today, I want you to think about your own dream. Is there something you once wanted that you set aside because you started believing your time had passed?

Maybe you never said the words out loud. Maybe you simply stopped trying because somewhere inside you, you believed you were too old, too late, or too far behind.

But where did that belief come from?

Was it something someone actually told you? Or was it an Invisible Rule that slowly became part of the way you see yourself and your future?

What if your dream is not over yet?

What if the chapter you thought had ended is actually waiting for a new beginning? What if today is the day you stop living by a rule you never consciously chose?

I know what it feels like to believe that your best years are behind you. I also know how powerful it can be to discover that the belief itself was never the truth.

At 77, I am not waiting for life to be over. I am excited about what I can still create, who I can still help, and what dreams may still become possible.

And maybe that is something you need to remember too.

You do not need permission from your age to dream. You do not need to follow someone else's timeline to create a meaningful life.

Your story is still yours to write.

So before you decide that it is too late, take a moment and ask yourself one important question.

Who told you there was a deadline for your dream?

You may discover that no one ever did.

Maybe the deadline was simply an Invisible Rule you learned to believe. And if you learned it, you can begin to question it.

That question could change the way you see your past, your present, and your future. It could help you see that the dream you thought was gone may still be waiting for you.

Your time may not have passed at all.

Maybe your next chapter is just beginning.
